A tragedy that literally shook the entire civilized world when the Nazis massacred civilians at Babiy Yar, a ravine in the outskirts of Kiev, starting with the city's Jews. Babiy Yar has become a symbol of crimes against humanity, an eternal part of the black chronicle of genocide displaying an extreme form of terrorism, made a part of state policy. The massacre began in late September, 1941 when Nazi forces occupying Kiev ordered its Jews to gather, bringing their warm clothes and valuables - as if they were to be taken elsewhere. The Jews were then marched to the steep Babiy Yar ravine and shot. 33,771 Jews were executed only in the first two days beginning September 29-30, 1941. A number of historians convincingly argue that the actual number of victims was three times larger. The massacre went down in the history of the long-suffering Jewish nation as the greatest ordeal. It is also true, however, that among the victims buried in the ravine are thousands of activists of the resistance movement of other ethnic origin: Ukrainians, Russians, Belorussians, Poles, Czechs and Georgians. There is two monuments were erected: one of them is soviet, another, erected in 1991, commemorates the memory of 33771 executed Jews. Nowadays Babiy Yar must be the most sorrowful place in Kiev, which will never have any analogues in the World.
