This is the most famous Ukrainian shrine. It was built in 1037 by the Ukrainian Prince Yaroslav the Wise. After numerous restorations in the 17 th -18 th cen. it became an example of the Ukrainian baroque style. At this time there is a monastery. Today the dimensions of the cathedral may not appear especially impressive. But remember that it was built in the first half of the 11 th century, when most of the architectural jewels of Europe did not yet exist. In those days the Metropolitan of Kyiv Illarion said of St. Sophia Cathedral: “The church is wonderful and glorious. There is nothing of the kind in any northern country.” Later the cathedral was reconstructed and enlarged. Inside the cathedral there are models of St Sophia in its initial and present form. On the eastern front where the plaster has been partially removed, strips of orange and pink masonry from the times of Jaroslav are visible.
Sophia Cathedral is under the patronage of UNESCO.
